INSTALLATION DOCUMENTS

Lucky You: Most of the FR-S/GT86s sold came with rather weak halogen projector headlights that don't show much in the way of forward lighting. Luckily for you, the Morimoto Retro-Quik system is designed as a direct bolt-on upgrade for a big performance boost inside the headlights on all Scion FR-S / Toyota GT86 models.

Bi-Xenon Projectors: Morimoto's most modern bi-xenon, the Mini H1 7.0, was an instant winner upon launch. Representing the first full overhaul of the Mini H1 since way back when the 1.0 came out, it's now one of the most advanced headlight projectors in the world today. Revised reflector optics paired with their curved cutoff shield produces one of the widest low beam patterns we've ever seen, and a high beam that will easily go the distance. Kuria Optic clear lenses maximize intensity throughout, and keep the cutoff line sharp, colorful, and attractive. New side-action solenoids are more than 3x stronger than the old and fussy vertically-sprung units. Result: Maximum light on the ground, zero glare to oncoming traffic for your Scion FR-S / Toyota GT86 headlights.

Mounting Hardware: 100% Engineered in the US. Laser cut from automotive-grade G10 fiberglass. The Retro-Quik brackets at the heart of the bi-xenon kit are designed to adapt the Morimoto Mini 7.0 Bi-xenon projectors directly in place of the unsophisticated stock units. Using the original mounting holes paired with new hardware, they are the beauty behind the bi-xenon kit that makes it an easy install on your Scion FR-S / Toyota GT86 headlights. You're welcome.

Optional HID Ballasts: Designed in California by Morimoto's engineer, Yoshi Ishida, the Morimoto XB 2.0 HID Ballasts are just as good looking on the outside as they are well-engineered on the inside. They are available in both 35w and 50w versions, use proprietary software by the pros at Hylux paired with packaging perfection from the masters at Morimoto. This is today's most modern iteration of a model that has sold more than half a million units since inception, and we don't think it can really get any better!

Optional H1 HID Bulbs: Homegrown by Morimoto to out-perform any alternatives on the market when installed in projector-based headlight--and it shows. We admit the latest generation XB HID bulbs are pretty impressive when compared to other bulbs, and even older Morimoto bulbs. At the heart of the XB bulbs is their perfectly-aligned 100% Philips quartz glass capsule that houses high quality halide salts from German-supplier Messer. In our annual lux comparison test, they produced nearly the same lumin Osity (intensity) as the industry benchmark Osram CBI bulbs at 5500K. No, you're not seeing things here, but yes you will be seeing everything at night.

Optional Relay Harness: As one of the most important parts in any HID lighting upgrade, don't skimp out when it comes to your wiring. It doesn't matter how good your ballasts are or how good your bulbs are, if your harness is a piece of crap, when it gives out your headlights are gonzo. The Morimoto HD Relay harness is easily worth the premium price compared to cheaper alternatives. With triple-sealed twin relays, 14ga. stranded copper wiring, over-molded fittings, and plug-n-play functionality, it will ensure everything functions properly and permanently from the original in-cabin controls. It's easily the best headlight wire harness out there.

Optional High Beam Splitters: Double high beams?! whaaaat! Put simply, the optional Morimoto high beam splitters allow you to make this feature work easily without any cutting or splicing to the factory wiring by diverting power from the halogen bulb into the projector's high beam solenoid, making them both work at the same time.

Optional Housing Sealant: Protection is priceless! When you're putting together a set of high-end headlights, the last thing you want is moisture in 'em the first time it rains outside. RetroRubber is the most effective way to make sure the original seal is fully restored. For the small price, why anybody wouldn't prevent their new headlights from fogging up is beyond us. It'll be the best twelve bucks you've ever spent.

There is no Substitute

by

The stock headlights in my 2015 FR-S were downright dangerous for driving on the dark, deer infested, windy back roads where I live. Even with the brights on they didn't light up the sides of the road very well. My previous vehicle had HIDs retrofitted into the stock headlights and I missed them very much after switching to the FR-S, so HIDs were high on my list of "must have" upgrades. I considered just getting a $50 HID kit from Amazon and simply installing HID bulbs into the stock projectors, but after a lot of research I learned that this is not the best idea and you get what you pay for with the $30-80 cheapo kits from Amazon, eBay, etc.

My kit arrived in about 3 days. I was very surprised since I selected free shipping, so I was expecting them to take at least a week to get here. Everything was very well packed and no items were missing. The first thing I noticed immediately was the quality. Everything felt very premium and built to last. The worst part of the installation was splitting the stock headlights, but once they were apart everything was mostly plug and play.

I say "mostly plug and play" because the brackets for the projectors required some modification to fit over the projectors. On the bottom of the projectors there are 2 "nubs" that the bracket would not fit over. One was for the high beam solenoid and the other appeared to just be part of the casting. Making two notches in the brackets was not difficult, but it was an extra step that I was not expecting. New boots will be required for sealing the rear of the headlight housing. I was disappointed that they were not included in the kit or offered as an option like they are on other Retroquick kits (for example the 2015 WRX kit offers them as an option). TRS does sell boots, but they are located elsewhere on the website. I contacted their amazing customer service and they graciously offered to send me a pair of boots for just the cost of shipping, but I had already come up with a solution using the stock boot, the H4 silicone adapter included in the kit, and some silicone RTV.

Once everything was installed the bulbs fired up instantly with no flickering or other issues you get from the cheaper kits. The light output is great and the cutoff is very sharp. They are on par with the HIDs I had in my previous vehicle and I will no longer fear driving at night (especially with the dual high beams).

TL;DR: Everything was great. Highly recommended. I gave it 4 stars because the projector brackets required some modification and boots were not included in the kit or offered as an option, so I had to invent my own solution.

First time Retrofit

by

I have a 2014 FRS and sadly they do not come with HID headlights, so I saw the good reviews for TRS and wanted to give this kit a try. The headlights from start to finish took roughly 5.5 hours from when I started till I was done aiming the headlights. The free shipping is prioirty shipping which was a great added bonus. When I got the package everything looked great. Awesome build quality and it was all packaged safely. I followed the DIY that is written for the car http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10296.

Following this guide made any questions I had easy to find answers for. The projectors come with the mounting plates that made the swap a straight drop in which was awesome since I did not have to measure or cut anything. Once the projectors were in it was time to seal the headlights back up and install them. As for aiming I found my cutoff to be about 8 inches to low but once that was adjusted I was amazed by the amount of light I now had from the car. I do a lot of country driving and it will be nice having the extra light output. If you drive down town the lights dont shine brighter than the street lights. I believe there are better bulbs and higher wattage ballasts to help with this if you so need it. I would just ask TRS as Im sure they can help. Finally the best part I enjoy is having that full blue band at the cutoff, its very enjoyable seeing that when driving around. This full kit is a must upgrade for this car and I am just glad that TRS made the kits so easy.

CONS: Finding some of the instruction documentation took longer than I wanted. The wiring instructions for the harness is on the back of the top label, and the projector assembly instructions are listed online. So dont be shocked when you recieve the package and there are no instructions included as they are on TRS website.
